Avis Carter is an educator and portrait photographer whose work is shaped by years of travel, teaching, and quiet observation. Long before formal training, she carried a camera on her journeys, capturing moments that spoke to her curiosity and love for stories. Living in Japan for five years, she learned to see light, discipline, and daily life through a new lens. Travels to China and India deepened her vision, photographing historic sites like the Terracotta Warriors and the Taj Mahal, reflecting on endurance, beauty, and legacy.
For sixteen years, Avis has taught elementary students, guiding curiosity, literacy, and discovery. For the past ten years, she has served as Library Information Specialist at Barkley Elementary, supporting learning in every form. Her academic journey spans a BS in Education, multiple master’s degrees, an Ed.S, and she is completing an MA in Photography at the Academy of Art University.
In her portraiture, Avis invites viewers to look past surface impressions and engage with the stories of resilience, growth, and shared humanity. With Embracing Roots, she creates images that resonate emotionally, revealing the depth and dignity behind each subject.
